Overview
The Cayman Islands’ Identification Card, known as My eID, is a government-issued, voluntary ID card designed to improve accessibility and remove barriers to essential services for residents of all ages. My eID provides individuals with a secure method to authenticate their identity in various situations, whether in-person or online.
Key Features and Benefits of My eID
1. Official Proof of Identity for All Ages
My eID serves as a recognized proof of identity for people of all ages in the Cayman Islands. It is especially beneficial for those who may not have another government-issued ID, enabling them to reliably access essential services.
2. Digital Signatures
My eID supports digital signatures, a secure, encrypted, and legally recognized alternative to handwritten signatures. These digital signatures verify the identity of the signer and confirm the authenticity and integrity of documents.
- Digital signatures maintain document integrity using cryptographic technology, making tampering and forgery nearly impossible.
- Recognized as legally binding under the Electronic Transactions Act, 2003 and compliant with eIDAS (electronic Identification, Authentication, and trust Services), digital signatures enable faster, compliant transactions.
- Digital signatures meet the requirements of electronic signature laws, providing both compliance and legal recognition.
3. Safer In-Person Transactions
Scanning the QR code on My eID allows you to share specific details from the Identification Register, including your immigration status and optional information such as address and contact details. This can be accessed through the My Info portal via eServices Sign In.
With a focus on privacy, My eID will only share essential information that you choose to distribute, reducing the risk of oversharing personal data. This safeguards users’ privacy during in-person transactions and offers peace of mind when presenting ID.
4. Save Time and Reduce Costs
My eID helps individuals and businesses save time and reduce costs associated with physical document management. The card’s digital capabilities reduce the need for paper, minimize document errors, and enable automated processes.
5. Electronic Reading for Faster Transactions
The card’s MRZ (Machine Readable Zone) strip can be electronically scanned, which may accelerate business processes and increase efficiency.
6. Authenticate Your eServices Sign-In Credentials
Link your eServices Sign In account to My eID for a secure, PIN-protected login experience, ensuring safe and reliable identity verification. My eID links your identity to eServices Sign In, enabling government agencies to offer more personalized services. It can also streamline information updates (like address changes) across platforms, ensuring data accuracy and reducing redundancy.
