Why Do I Need a Smart Card Reader?
To access the digital features of your Cayman Islands Identification Card, you'll need a device that supports NFC (Near Field Communication), or you can use a Personal Computer/Smart Card (PC/SC) compatible Smart Card Reader.
How to Get a Smart Card Reader
You can purchase a Smart Card Reader:

Note: Smart Card Readers must be PC/SC compatible to work with the Cayman Islands Identification Card and the My eID software.
Types of Smart Card Readers
1. miniLector BLUE Smart Card Reader
This is a versatile Smart Card Reader designed for both mobile devices and PCs. It features Bluetooth and USB connectivity, making it ideal for residents who need to access their digital identity securely.
The miniLector BLUE works with:
- Mobile devices via Bluetooth
- Personal Computers (PC's) via USB
Bluetooth Mode: Pairing with mobile devices (smartphones or tablets) is quick and easy. The device is powered by its internal rechargeable battery when used with Bluetooth.
USB Mode: When connected to a PC, the miniLector BLUE uses the PC’s USB port for power and automatically charges its internal battery. It is recognized by most operating systems through the PC/SC interface.

2. miniLector AIR PPAD
A USB Smart Card Reader equipped with a built-in keypad for secure PIN entry. This Reader is particularly suited for office environments, providing enhanced security for sensitive transactions.
The miniLector AIR PPAD is a USB Smart Card Reader with a built-in keypad and display, supporting Secure PIN Entry (SPE). The PIN is securely entered on the Reader’s keypad, reducing the risk of malware or viruses stealing your PIN.
This reader complies with major industry standards, including:
- Microsoft® WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Labs)
- PC/SC
- EMV™ Level 1
- CE and FCC
3. Smart Card Keyboards
These combine the functionality of a keyboard with a built-in Smart Card Reader, offering a streamlined solution for secure data entry and card-based authentication. They are particularly suitable for environments that require frequent and secure access to digital services, ensuring an efficient workflow without the need for separate devices.
How to Use a Smart Card Reader
On a computer
1. Download and install the My eID software.
2. Using a USB, plug in the miniLector BLUE to your computer and switch the Reader to USB mode using the toggle on the left side.
3. Insert the Cayman Islands Identification Card chip-first, with the QR code facing up.
4. When prompted, enter your PIN into the computer.
On a mobile device
1. Install the My eID app.
2. Switch the miniLector BLUE to Bluetooth mode using the toggle on the left of the Reader.
3. In the app, press “New Device” and select miniLector BLUE.
4. Insert the Cayman Islands Identification Card chip-first, with the QR code facing up.
5. When prompted, enter your PIN on the phone.
Ensure the Smart Card Reader is fully charged before use. Low battery can cause disconnections during operation. If you experience any connection issues, confirm the Reader has sufficient charge and try again.
