Use this guide to register as a British Overseas Territories Citizen (BOTC) if you are under 18, or if you are an adult who was born in the Cayman Islands and lived here for the first 10 years of your life. You can apply online to register as a BOTC with the Office of the Deputy Governor (ODG).
Prerequisites:
1. An eServices Sign In account — you must be a signed-in eServices user to apply. If you do not have one, select Register Here on the Sign In panel before you begin.
2. The consent and declaration forms — the forms you need depend on who is submitting the application. Once you’ve completed filling out the application from, click the Download form link beside each form in the Documents section. Print and sign them, then upload them in the Documents section.
3. Certified copies of your supporting documents — your copied documents must be certified by a Justice of the Peace or Notary Public. Have them saved as PDF, PNG or JPEG files.
4. The application fee — The application fee is a one-time payment of KYD $1,300, which includes a non-refundable filing fee of KYD $500.00, paid online by credit or debit card, or at any Cayman Islands Post Office using a payment voucher.
Step-by-Step Instructions to Register as a British Overseas Territories Citizen:
1. Go to the British Overseas Territories Citizenship & Nationality Services page. https://my.egov.ky/web/odg
2. Select Start Registration under Register as a British Overseas Territories Citizen.
The BOTC Registration Application page opens. Read the Before You Start guidance, the list of required documents, the Payment Details and the Privacy Notice.
Consent and declaration forms. You can download the forms in the Documents section once you’ve completed the relevant parts of the form. Only the forms that match who is submitting the application are shown there, and they must be printed, signed and uploaded before you can submit.
3. Select Sign in to Start a New Application under Start Your Application at the bottom of the page.
4. Enter your User Name and password, then Select Sign In.
5. Signed in with My eID?
If you are signed in to an eServices account that is linked to your Cayman Islands Identification card (My eID), the "Use your My eID details?" message appears when you open the Applicant Details section.
a) Select Yes, fill them in at the bottom right of the message.
The message reads: "You have signed in with your My eID. We can fill your name, address and contact details from the Identification Register. Check all details are correct and update if needed, before you submit."
If you would rather complete the fields yourself, Select No, I'll enter them myself.
b) Check the prefilled fields and complete any that are still blank.
Fields filled from the Identification Register are marked with a green Prefilled label beside the field name, making it easier for you to complete your application. Check every prefilled field and update anything that is incorrect before you continue. Some fields, such as Title / Salutation, are not prefilled and still need to be completed.
6. Select Start beside Applicant Details.
The Application For BOTC Registration page lists the five sections of the form
— Applicant Details, Parents / Guardian Details, Convictions / Residency, Documents and Payment Method — with a progress bar showing how many are complete. Fields marked with a red asterisk (*) are mandatory.
7. Complete the Applicant Details section.
Complete the mandatory fields. Complete every field marked with a red asterisk (*) before you continue. If a mandatory field is left empty, the message "This field is required" appears under it.
a) Who is applying
– Is this application being submitted on behalf of a minor? — Yes / No
Fields change based on your answer.
Answering Yes shows Who is submitting the application on behalf of the minor? (Mother / Father / Both Parents / Guardian).
Answering No shows Is the applicant aged 18 or over?(Yes / No).
b) Personal Details
– Title / Salutation — Mr; Mrs; Ms; Miss; Dr.
– First Name, Middle Name(s), Surname — enter your names (Middle Name(s) is optional)
– Date of Birth — enter as dd/mm/yyyy or select the calendar icon
– Sex — Male; Female.
– Country of Birth — select from the full country list
– Nationality at Birth and Present Nationality — select from the full list (includes British Overseas Territories Citizen)
c) Immigration Status
– Current Immigration Status — select from the list
Current Immigration Status options:
Acknowledgement of the Right to be Caymanian; Caymanian Status; Continuation of Acknowledgement of the Right to be Caymanian; Permanent Residence; Permanent Residence (as a dependant of her father); Permanent Residence (as a dependant of her mother); Permanent Residence (as a dependant of his father); Permanent Residence (as a dependant of his mother); Right to be Caymanian; Other.
– Date Acquired — enter as dd/mm/yyyy
– Applicant File Number — enter your file number, if you have one
d) First Application
– Is this the first application? — Yes / No
Fields change based on your answer. Answering No shows Date of Previous Application.
e) Name at Birth
– Is your name at birth different from your current name? — Yes / No
Fields change based on your answer. Answering Yes shows Previous First Name, Previous Middle Name(s), Previous Surname, Date of Name Change and Reason for Change (select from the list), shown below.
Changed your name by deed poll? If you select Deed Poll as the Reason for Change, the Certified Copy of Deed Poll of Change of Name becomes mandatory in the Documents section.
f) Contact Information
– Address Line, City / Town, Postal Code — enter your current address
– Email Address — enter a valid email address
– Phone Number — enter your number; Alternate Phone Number is optional
Finish this section: Select Save & Continue to save and move to the next section, or Save and exit application form to save your progress and return later. When the section saves, the message "Success: Your application has been saved." appears at the bottom left of the screen.
8. Complete the Parents / Guardian Details section.
Complete the mandatory fields. Complete every field marked with a red asterisk (*) before you continue. If a mandatory field is left empty, the message "This field is required" appears under it.
a) Parent, Marriage & Custody
– Were your parents married at the time of your birth? — Yes / No
Fields change based on your answer. Answering No shows Were your parents married subsequent to your birth? (Yes / No).
– With whom do you ordinarily reside? — select from the list
With whom do you ordinarily reside? options: Both Parents; Mother; Father; Guardian; Other.
Where sole custody has been granted to one parent, you will need to provide proof of it.
- Mother's Details
– Is a British Overseas Territories Citizen? — Yes / No
– Is alive? — Yes / No
Fields change based on your answer. Answering Yes to Is a British Overseas Territories Citizen? shows the BOTC Certificate Number field (e.g. 017/68).
– First Name, Middle Name(s), Surname — enter your mother's names
– Date of Birth, Country of Birth, Nationality at Your Birth — enter or select from the list
– What was the mother's immigration status at the time of the applicant's birth? — select from the list; always mandatory
– What is the mother's current immigration status? — select from the list
Immigration status options: Acknowledgement of the Right to be Caymanian; Caymanian Status; Continuation of Acknowledgement of the Right to be Caymanian; Permanent Residence; Right to be Caymanian; Other.
Fields change based on your answer. Selecting Other for either question shows Please specify the immigration status. Answering No to Is alive? hides the current immigration status question, so only the status at the time of the applicant's birth is needed.
Your answers change the documents you must upload. If either answer is Permanent Residence or Caymanian Status, the matching document for that parent becomes mandatory in the Documents section (see step 10).
– Address Line, City / Town, Postal Code, Email Address, Phone Number — enter your mother's contact details; Alternate Phone Number is optional
c) Father's Details
– Complete the same fields for your father — as described for your mother above, including the two immigration status questions
Finish this section: Select Save & Continue to save and move to the next section, or Save and exit application form to save your progress and return later. When the section saves, the message "Success: Your application has been saved." appears at the bottom left of the screen.
9. Complete the Convictions / Residency section.
Complete the mandatory fields. Complete every field marked with a red asterisk (*) before you continue. If a mandatory field is left empty, the message "This field is required" appears under it.
a) Convictions
– Have you ever been arrested for any crimes or offences in the Cayman Islands and/or overseas? — Yes / No
– Have you ever been convicted in a court of law of any crime or offence in the Cayman Islands and/or overseas? — Yes / No
Fields change based on your answer. Answering Yes to the arrest question opens a Details of Arrest box. Answering Yes to the conviction question opens a Details of Crime box. Both are mandatory once shown.
b) Residency
– If the application is granted, will you permanently reside in the Cayman Islands? — Yes / No
– Date of first arrival in the Cayman Islands to reside — select the Year (mandatory), Month and Day
c) Your Addresses
List every address you have lived at in the Cayman Islands and the years covered.
– House / Apt No — optional
– Street Name — enter the street
– District — select from the list
District options: George Town; West Bay; Bodden Town; North Side; East End; Cayman Brac; scroll for the rest of the list.
– From and To — select the years you lived there
Select Add Address to add another row, or Select the red delete icon to remove one.
d) Mother's Addresses and Father's Addresses
– Is your mother's address the same as yours? — Yes / No
– Is your father's address the same as yours? — Yes / No
Fields change based on your answer. Answering No opens an address row for that parent (House / Apt No, Street Name, District, From, To) with its own Add Address button. If an error was made, you can also select the trash icon to delete the address.
Finish this section: Select Save & Continue to save and move to the next section, or Save and exit application form to save your progress and return later. When the section saves, the message "Success: Your application has been saved." appears at the bottom left of the screen.
10. Complete the Documents section.
Upload documents to support the information you entered. Documents marked with an asterisk (*) are mandatory and must be uploaded, and copies must be certified by a Justice of the Peace or Notary Public.
a) Required Documents
– Certified Copy of Your Birth Certificate — mandatory
– Certified Copy of Data/Photo Page of current passport — mandatory
– Proof of Immigration Status — mandatory; select the document type first, then Select file
Proof of Immigration Status options: Certified Copy OR Certificate of Caymanian Status; Certified Copy of Permanent Residence Letter; Letter / Certificate of Acknowledgement of Caymanian Status or Right to be Caymanian.
– Employment Verification — mandatory; select the document type first, then Select file
Employment Verification options: Employment Letter; Unemployment Letter; College/University Verification Letter.
– Recent Colour Full-Face Photograph — mandatory
Select Select file beside a document, choose the file on your device, then Select Open.
Select the X beside a file to remove it, then upload the correct document.
b) Mother's Documents and Father's Documents
Attach whichever apply to each parent: Certified Copy of Mother's / Father's Birth Certificate, Mother / Father Certificate of Caymanian Status, Certified Copy of Mother's / Father's Permanent Residence, and Mother / Father Residency and Employment Rights Certificate. The Certified Copy of Mother's Birth Certificate is marked mandatory (*).
Documents made mandatory by your answers appear under Required Documents instead.
c) Consent and Declaration Forms
Only the forms that match your answers in Applicant Details are shown, and all of them are mandatory. Select Download form beside a form, print and sign it, then Select Select file to upload it.
– Not submitted on behalf of a minor — Consent Form of Applicant and Declaration by Applicant
– Submitted by the Mother or Father — Consent Form of Single Parent and Declaration by Single Parent
– Submitted by Both Parents — Consent Form of Both Parents and Declaration by Both Parents
– Submitted by a Guardian — Consent Form of Guardian and Declaration by Guardian, plus the Certificate of Court Order OR Guardian Consent
If you change who is submitting the application, the forms shown change too. You are warned before any uploaded forms are removed.
d) Where Applicable
Attach these only if they apply to your circumstances:
Certified Copy of Continuation Letter if Age 17, Certified Copy of Parents' Marriage Certificate, Certified Copy of Deed Poll of Change of Name, Certificate of Court Order OR Guardian Consent, Work Permit Approval Letter.
Finish this section: Select Save & Continue to save and move to the next section, or Save and exit application form to save your progress and return later. When the section saves, the message "Success: Your application has been saved." appears at the bottom left of the screen.
A document type needs a file. If you choose a document type from a list (for example Employment Letter) but do not upload a file, the message "At least one document is required" appears under it and the Documents section is not marked complete.
11. Complete the Payment Method section.
– Payment Method — select from the list
Payment Method options: Credit / Debit Card; Voucher (Pay at Post Office).
The Application Fee is shown (payment can be made in USD or KYD): The application fee is a one-time payment of KYD $1,300, which includes a non-refundable filing fee of KYD $500.00
Voucher (Pay at Post Office). A "How voucher payment works" box appears: "Next Step: Click Review, then Submit Application to finalise. Once submitted, you can download a payment voucher showing the amount due. Take this voucher to any post office to make your payment. After paying, return to Submitted Applications, find this application (status "Awaiting Payment by Voucher"), and upload your proof of payment to complete your submission." Follow steps 15 to 18 below after you submit.
Credit / Debit Card. You pay securely online during your application, and your application is submitted immediately once payment is confirmed. You do not need a voucher or a post office visit, so steps 15 to 18 do not apply.
Finish this section: Select Save & Continue to save and move to the next section, or Save and exit application form to save your progress and return later. When the section saves, the message "Success: Your application has been saved." appears at the bottom left of the screen.
12. Check that all five sections show as complete on the Application For BOTC Registration page, then Select Review.
Incomplete sections. If any section is incomplete, selecting Review opens a pop-up: "There are incomplete sections for this application" with "Please correct the following:" and the section name (for example Documents). The section is also marked in red on the summary. Select Go to Section, complete the missing items, and Select Save & Continue.
When all sections are complete the progress bar shows 5 of 5 complete and the message "Your application is almost complete. Please click Review and then Submit Application to successfully finalise and proceed with your application." appears.
13. Review your application, then complete the Consent and Declaration at the bottom of the page.
Check every answer on the review page. Select Back if you need to make corrections to any section.
– Who is giving consent? — filled in for you from who is submitting the application, and cannot be changed here
Mother or Father shows A single parent; Both Parents shows Both parents; Guardian shows A guardian; an applicant aged 18 or over shows The applicant. To change it, Select Back and edit Applicant Details.
– I consent to the Office of the Deputy Governor making any enquiries… — tick the box
– I declare that the information given in this application is true and complete… — tick the box
– Your Name — enter your full name (the Declaration Date fills in automatically)
– Signature and printed name belongs to — Applicant / Parent / Legal Guardian / Other
– Signature — sign in the box with your mouse or finger; Select Clear to start again
14. Select Submit Application at the bottom of the page.
A "Processing" message appears: "Please wait, your application is being submitted..."
If you chose Voucher (Pay at Post Office), the "Application Submitted — Payment Required" pop-up appears: "Your application for Registration as a British Overseas Territories Citizen has been received, but is not yet complete. Download your payment voucher and pay at any post office to finish your submission." It also shows your Application ID.
15. Select Download Voucher PDF in the pop-up.
You can download the Voucher here, and you will also be emailed the voucher. Your application is not complete until you pay. Download the voucher and take it to any Cayman Islands Post Office. Quote the Application ID when you pay. Once your payment is verified, your application will move to submitted.
The Payment Voucher shows the amount due, your Application ID, the applicant's name and the payment method. Save or print it.
16. Take the voucher to any post office, pay the amount due and keep your receipt.
17. Sign back in, then Select Upload Payment Receipt beside your BOTC Registration under My Submitted Applications.
Until your receipt is uploaded, your application shows the status PAYMENT REQUIRED.
18. Select Select Document, choose your receipt, then Select Submit Documents.
The Document Type is set to Payment Receipt. The maximum file size is 2 MB, and the file formats allowed are PDF, PNG and JPEG. Select the X beside the file to remove it.
The message "Your documents have been uploaded successfully." appears. Select Back.
Your application now shows the status PAYMENT REVIEW under My Submitted Applications while your payment is being verified.
