What is the Certificate of Roadworthiness?

Under the Traffic Act, the Certificate of Roadworthiness certifies you’re your vehicle is roadworthy for the period stated. Locally, it is also simply referred to as an inspection certificate. The length of time that an inspection can be granted is as prescribe by the Traffic Act & Regulations. Our inspector can also use their discretion in the interest of public safety based on the condition of the vehicle at the time of inspection.

Otherwise, the inspection cannot exceed:

  • 5 years (sixty-two months), for a new vehicle that has not been registered anywhere before.
  • 3 years (thirty-eight months), for a vehicle that is less than ten years old.
  • 1 year (fourteen months), for a vehicle that is more than ten years old.

A vehicle’s licence on the other hand, can then be renewed for any combination of periods that will fit within the time period of the Certificate of Roadworthiness granted.

However, the vehicle licence cannot exceed:

  • 5 years, for a new vehicle being registered for the first time in the Islands that has not been registered anywhere before.
  • 3 years, for a vehicle that is less than ten years old, if the vehicle was registered before.
  • 1 year, for a vehicle that is more than ten years old, whether or not the vehicle was registered before.

3-months and 6-months vehicle licence renewals are also available for all vehicles.
